While credit card payment processing looks a little different depending on whether it’s an in-person or online transaction, in a general sense, this is how it works. The customer provides their credit card info to the merchant they want to purchase products or services from. This can be done by swiping, dipping, or tapping a physical credit or debit card in a physical card reader. Or, in the case of an ecommerce transaction, by securely entering their card details.
Your payment device (or payment gateway) then sends the transaction details to a payment processor, merchant services provider, or acquiring bank like North that forwards the authorization request to the card brand (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) and ultimately the issuing bank of the customer’s card. That bank then approves or declines the transaction and communicates that info back to the card network that relays it to the payment processor.
Next comes what is known as settlement when you as a business batch out your daily transactions. Once you do, it’s usually one business day until you receive the proceeds from your transactions in your merchant account (basically a business bank account for the proceeds from your transactions).
